Springfield Summer Festival is here
Summer has come to Springfield Park and there’s something for everyone.
Hackney Council, Hackney Homes and NHS City and Hackney are proud to present Springfield Festival - a day of homegrown talent, food and fun al fresco. The event is part of Parks for Life, a programme of healthy events happening in the borough’s award-winning parks and green spaces this summer.
Whether you’re into quirky, circusy, sporty or out-doorsy, we’ve gone to town to bring you the best children’s entertainment around. This includes: a mega climbing wall; a teepee for tall story-telling; a natural play area with tree-trunk forts and hidey holes; plus kite-making, face-painting and circus performers galore. Not to mention interactive games and giant snakes and ladders, courtesy of Bump Buddies, who are also on hand to give help and advice to families-to-be.
Cllr Jonathan Mcshane, Cabinet member for Community Services, said: “This is the last big event in the Parks for Life calendar. It’s been a packed programme that has seen thousands of Hackney residents enjoying a wide range of events in the borough’s award-winning parks and green spaces this summer.”
Green is a key theme for many Hackney people, which is why there’s a bona fide foodie focus at this festival. We’re all set for healthy cooking demonstrations by local chefs, compared by Andi Oliver of BBC 2 s Neneh and Andi Dish it Up and featuring Kerrie Dunlop of Jamie Oliver s Fifteen fame. And there’s tons of food stalls, information and inspiration for East London’s urban gardeners. Growing Communities – the social enterprise veg-box people based at Stoke Newington’s Farmers Market – will be opening their market garden site for tours and offering cooking demos.
Health and exercise is also big this year - as 2012 approaches. With only two years left to go for gold, why not get started at one of the mini-sports tournaments or school sports day events, run by Hackney Homes? Also on the day, Hackney Homes residents will find plenty of practical information, advice and support on services. NHS City and Hackney will also be encouraging you to take “Health in your Hands” by taking advantage of free health checks, dental screenings and information and advice on local health services.
On the main stage, the musical line-up is set to feature some of East London’s best young talents. “Hackney’s Got Talent” asks the boldest amongst us, to step up to the plate and let our judges – and finally the Springfield Festival audience - decide who deserves to win. Sign up at 1pm for finals at around 5-5.30pm. Earlier in the day, “Eastside Youth Centre” will perform street dance and “Karma Free” duo do their magic with amazing time-looped beatboxing.
And after all of that, if you need to take “time out”, we’ve got the free well-being and pamper possibilities all on tap. Come and visit the Massage Works and Shoreditch Spa tents where complimentary massages, lavender bags, bath bags and relaxing herbal teas are on offer for those with festival fatigue.
