Speaker of Hackney supports local carers

Speaker of Hackney Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas visited City and Hackney Carers Centre this week to officially announce the organisation as one of her nominated charities.

The Centre which is based in Tyssen Street, Dalston, supports people who provide unpaid care and support to family or friends who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. The Centre s overall aim is to improve carers quality of life and support them in their caring role.

Cllr Fajana-Thomas, who attended the organisation s AGM this week, said: “It gives me great pleasure to choose the City and Hackney Carers Centre as one of my nominated charities for 2011-12. I am hoping to raise as much funds as possible for such a good cause. I am also actively trying to raise the profile of the organisation by making people aware of the good service it provides.

“I am proud of the high quality services the Centre provides which help to reduce the social exclusion and isolation faced by so many carers.”

City and Hackney Carers Centre s Maggie Bromage said: "We are pleased that with the Speaker’s support we can reach out to even more carers; people who may benefit from our information & advice services, support groups, advocacy services, training sessions or maybe like to join us on one of our activities or trips. We would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome all Hackney carers to our Carers Centre; we are here to support you!"

So far, the Speaker has already raised thousands of pounds for two local organisations as part of her role as the borough’s civic representative. The money will be divided between the chosen charities at the end of the Speaker s term of office in April 2012.
