Saving money on energy bills for Hackney Homes tenants

greenestates.jpg

Vulnerable tenants could see significant savings to their energy bills as a result of an innovative green project by Hackney Homes.

Hackney Homes’ Green Estates scheme, in partnership with Energy Advice Provider, Climate Energy, provides free, personalised and independent energy advice to older and vulnerable residents including those who do not have English as their first language.

After a successful launch on four estates in the pilot year, the scheme has expanded to eight estates in 2015.

The first session of the year took place on Rhodes Estate in January. Residents received free energy monitors and accessories and an opportunity to book a home visit from an energy saving expert and advice on reducing fuel bills and improving energy efficiency.

Information on special discounted fuel tariffs and details of grants to help with fuel debt were also available on the day.

More than 200 tenants across the eight Green Estates will benefit from receiving face-to-face, energy saving home visits.

Hackney Homes resident, Osman Keser said: "I learnt a lot from the energy advice session. The new monitor allows me to control how much energy I use in my home. I really appreciated having an interpreter to explain how to use the new monitor as English isn't my first language. I now have a better understanding of how I can save money on some of my bills.”Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Phillip Glanville said: “This scheme is an opportunity to target some of our hard-to-reach groups, offering advice that could save them money in the long term.

“We are aware of the financial pressures some residents face and the Green Estates programme allows information to be tailored to those who may have difficulty accessing information via other channels."

The Hackney Homes team will also be working closely with Tenants and Residents Associations (TRAs) from the estates involved to encourage 'Green Champions', who would promote the benefits of living a greener lifestyle to the community.
