Residents enjoy lunch with Hackney's Speaker for Silver Sunday
Over a hundred residents joined the Speaker of Hackney for lunch to celebrate Silver Sunday at Hackney Town Hall, on 7 October 2018. The spritely group danced the afternoon away to a selection of 50s and 60s tunes and were entertained by the Hackney Empire community choir.
Silver Sunday is the annual national celebration established by the Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Westminster City Councillor Christabel Flight, after a report discovered more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely.

It was a lovely afternoon and I enjoyed meeting new people in celebration of Silver Sunday for older people. It’s important that as a community we do what we can to support those who might be feeling lonely or isolated.
I was really pleased to see so many smiling faces and to see everyone chatting to each other and enjoying themselves. It was a great success to bring so many people together to celebrate Silver Sunday.
Some of the comments left from attendees included: “This was the best event I have ever been to in 67 years. It was fantastic.”
Another said: “Thank you for a wonderful day, I will now go home and feel like I’m 16 again!"
Through a variety of free activities Silver Sunday is offering people a chance to keep active in body and spirit, try new things, meet their neighbours and, ultimately, overcome loneliness.
The Speaker’s office partnered with Connect Hackney to host this event and plan to mark the day again next year.
