Overall bus performance in Hackney unaffected by low traffic neighbourhoods

Bus in Hackney Central

Bus speeds and waiting times have not been affected by the introduction of low traffic neighbourhoods, according to Hackney Council analysis of Transport for London bus performance figures.

The analysis found that average bus speeds remain consistent with previous years and matched trends across the capital during 2020, where bus speeds increased significantly during the first lockdown, before falling in August and September and rising again in October, November and December.

For the two year period prior to the pandemic, all day speeds had an overall average of 7.8mph, and for the first two periods of the 2021 reporting year (April - May 2021), the average speed in Hackney was 8mph. This trend is replicated during morning peak hours. For the two years prior to the pandemic, average morning peak bus speeds in Hackney were 7.2mph. For the first two periods of the 2021 reporting year (April - May 2021), the average speed during the morning peak in Hackney was 7.3mph.

Excess passenger waiting times, which is a measurement of the average of how long passengers actually wait at a stop for their bus compared to the expected average wait according to schedule, on two bus routes (the 394 and 236) that travel in and around Hackney’s low traffic neighbourhoods also did not rise or fall after their introduction.

We’ve been monitoring the performance of our low traffic neighbourhoods closely, and this includes their effect on buses in the borough, which we know are vital for so many people in Hackney.

Encouragingly the data shows that bus speeds remain consistent across the borough, and that as LTNs support people to walk, shop and cycle locally, buses remain an attractive mode of transport for everyone to use.
