A big upgrade is underway at open water swimming "hidden gem"
Work on the transformation of Hackney’s iconic West Reservoir Centre in Woodberry Down has started.
Hackney Council has begun the main phase of a year-long upgrade to make the much-loved facility more inclusive, accessible and environmentally friendly.
Backed by investment from the Greater London Authority (GLA), the ambitious improvements will deliver new community spaces, better access for swimmers and accessible green space and biodiversity in and around the reservoir – creating a more welcoming destination for both local residents and visitors from across London.
The phased works have been carefully planned to ensure the Centre remains open throughout the project. Alternative routes, clear signage, and temporary facilities will help support the thousands of people who visit the site each week for open water swimming and water sports.
The West Reservoir Centre is one of Hackney’s hidden gems, a place where communities connect with nature, get active, and enjoy some of the borough’s most stunning open water views.
“These exciting improvements are about so much more than bricks and mortar, they’re about opening up this space to even more people and ensuring it reflects Hackney’s commitment to climate action and inclusive design.
“We’re proud to be working with the GLA to secure its future for generations to come.”
Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney
Key improvements will include:
- New accessible entrances, pathways and facilities
- Improved connections and safer routes across the site
- Biodiversity-focused planting and landscaping
- Upgraded spaces for water sports and community use
Regular updates will be shared on the project webpage, through social media, and via local newsletters, while on-site signage and staff briefings will keep park users and Centre visitors informed every step of the way.
The works are due to be completed by May 2026.
