Islamophobia Awareness Month-2

We stand united with Hackney’s Muslim communities this Islamophobia Awareness Month

This November marks Islamophobia Awareness Month, under the powerful theme ‘Flip the Script’.

Hackney residents can find out about the support available for people subjected to Islamophobia this month at a pop-up session at Dalston CLR James Library.

The Council has dedicated teams working alongside the police, partners and the community to tackle and prevent Islamophobia and all forms of hate crime in Hackney. The drop-in event will be an opportunity to find out more about this support and how to report incidents.

  • Where: Dalston CLR James Library, Dalston Square, E8 3BQ
  • When: 1.30-4.30pm, Thursday 27 November

“As a borough with diversity as its strength – and as a proud home to our Muslim communities – we stand united with Muslim residents this Islamophobia Awareness Month.

“The call to ‘flip the script’ is to move from assumptions to awareness, from silence to allyship and from tokenism to true inclusion.

“In Hackney, we work year round to tackle hate crime, educate about racism and prejudice, and reach out in solidarity to those communities who are under-represented. But we know that events worldwide have at times challenged community cohesion, and that a global, growing discourse of division has made many people feel less safe.

“That’s why it’s more important than ever that we celebrate what unites us, and why we’re reiterating our commitment to tackling Islamophobia and building a Hackney in which hate has no place and unity is our strongest foundation.

“Hate crimes, especially those affecting our Muslim communities, often go unreported. If you’re a victim of hate crime, we encourage you to report it so you can get the support you need and that we can help bring perpetrators to justice."

Mayor Caroline Woodley and Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas OBE, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Regulatory Services
