Statement on murder on Downs Park Road
A statement from Mayor of Hackney, Zoë Garbett, following yesterday’s tragic murder on Downs Park Road on 13 July 2026
“We were shocked and saddened to learn about the tragic murder of a man in Hackney yesterday afternoon. Our thoughts go to the family and friends of the victim.
“We know that our residents will be worried and upset and we are offering our support to those affected by this incident. Our teams are ready to provide assistance to the police in their investigation as needed.
“We understand that the incident took place close to one of our schools. The school was closed to students for the summer at the time of the incident, and the police have confirmed that they do not believe it to involve any pupils, and are treating it as an isolated incident. The wellbeing of our school communities is important to us, so we ask anyone that has particular concerns to please reach out to us.
“As we await the outcome of the police investigation, we ask people to avoid sharing unconfirmed reports from social media. Police were called at 13:42hrs on Monday, 13 July to Downs Park Road, Hackney following reports of a stabbing. The victim, a man in his late 20s, sadly died at the scene despite best efforts of paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.
