Statement on military action in the Middle East
A message to Hackney residents from the Mayor of Hackney
"I am very conscious that communities in Hackney, especially those of us who have friends or family in the Middle East, will be extremely anxious following news of military action, loss of life and travel restrictions at this time.
"We are a proudly diverse, inclusive and anti-racist borough, and moments of international crisis can have a profound emotional impact. News has been breaking as some of our communities have been observing Ramadan, Purim and Lent, which are times for peace, reflection and community. I share the distress and worry felt right now.
“At times like these it is more important than ever that we support one another, and practice the values of respect, understanding and unity that make us who we are.
"We are working closely with community organisations, schools and faith partners to make Hackney a Borough of Sanctuary, where everyone feels safe, represented and respected.”
Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney
