Official: Hackney is London's top borough for parks
A record 34 of Hackney’s parks and green spaces have been rated among the best in the country.
Hackney has received 34 Green Flag Awards through the international accreditation scheme run by Keep Britain Tidy, which recognises parks and green spaces that are well-managed, accessible, and biodiverse.
This result means Hackney Council has retained its position as the borough with the most Green Flag parks in London.
The Council surpassed last year’s total of 33 awards, with Clapton Common receiving an accreditation for the first time following works to improve the Common, including a newly refurbished play area and local nature recovery work.
The awards recognise the Council's long-term commitment to investing in and caring for Hackney's parks, helping ensure they are welcoming, biodiverse and thriving spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Other community organisations in Hackney which received a Green Flag Community Award include The Tree Musketeers for their work managing the Hackney Community Tree Nursery and Edible Forest Garden and Core Arts in Homerton.
Access to high-quality green spaces is especially important in Hackney, as one of the country’s most densely populated boroughs, where many residents do not have their own garden.
Any green space that is freely accessible to the public is eligible to enter for a Green Flag Award. Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag Award status.
A Green Flag Community Award recognises quality sites managed by voluntary and community groups. Green Heritage Site Accreditation is judged on the treatment of the site’s historic features and the standard of conservation.
“Everyone deserves access to top-quality green spaces, close to home. That’s why we are so incredibly proud that 34 of our parks have been recognised as among the best in the country.
“This achievement is a credit to the hard work of Hackney’s parks team, alongside the many parks user groups, volunteers and partners whose care and dedication make our parks a haven for nature and residents alike.”
Cllr Jacob Cable, Cabinet Member for Climate, Clean Air, Energy and Transport
