Mayor Woodley and Hackney parks team

Hackney is London's number one borough for Green Flag Parks!

Hackney has been named the London borough with the most Green Flag Awards, after receiving 33 of the prestigious awards — the international benchmark for well-managed, accessible, and biodiverse public spaces.

This achievement places Hackney joint first in London and joint second in the UK for the number of Green Flag sites.

The awards recognise exceptional standards in park maintenance, environmental sustainability and community involvement.

Building upon last year’s 31 Green Flag-standard parks, the Council received accreditation for two additional sites: Fairchild's Garden in Shoreditch and Daubeney Fields in Kings Park. These parks have received significant Council investment to make much-needed improvements, including the recent installation of an outdoor gym, new pathways and improved entrances at Daubeney Fields.

The Tree Musketeers, a group of volunteers, also secured a Green Flag Community Award for their hard work and dedication in looking after the Hackney Community Tree Nursery on Hackney Marshes.

Hackney Council remains committed to maintaining the high standards of its parks and green spaces. This year, three new play area upgrades are scheduled for Clissold Park, London Fields (North), and Millfields Park. Additionally, the Council is refurbishing the basketball courts and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) in Hackney Downs, resurfacing the artificial turf pitch in Haggerston Park, continuing to focus on local nature recovery, and creating a new publicly accessible green space at West Reservoir.

Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney, said,

“In a densely built borough like Hackney, our parks and green spaces offer a vital opportunity to connect with nature, find space to rest and play, and bring huge benefits to health and wellbeing.

“I’m so proud that 33 of our green spaces have been recognised as among the best in the country, already surpassing our ambitious goal of achieving 32 Green Flag Awards by 2026. This is a testament to the dedication of our parks team, and the support of a network of incredible volunteers and committed user groups who work rain or shine to keep these spaces thriving, welcoming and biodiverse for everyone to enjoy.”

The Green Flag Award Scheme (http://greenflagaward.org/) is run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy and Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.

Hackney received the joint highest number of Green Flag Awards in London, alongside the City of Westminster, and the second highest in the UK, behind the Canal and River Trust.

Any green space that is freely accessible to the public is eligible to enter for a Green Flag Award. Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag Award status. A Green Flag Community Award recognises quality sites managed by voluntary and community groups. Green Heritage Site Accreditation is judged on the treatment of the site’s historic features and the standard of conservation.

Keep Britain Tidy is a leading environmental charity. We set the standard for the management of parks and beaches, inspire people to be litter-free, to waste less and live more sustainably. We run campaigns and programmes including the Great British Spring Clean, Eco-Schools, Love Parks Week (25th July – 3rd August 2025), Buy Nothing New Month, Eco-Schools, the Green Flag Award for parks and green spaces, the Blue Flag/ Seaside Awards for beaches and blue spaces, and the Green Key for sustainable tourism and hospitality.
