New Council homes approved for Nye Bevan Estate

A new terrace of nine homes along Millfields Road in Clapton are the first of a fresh wave of more than 300 Council homes to get the go ahead.

The nine family sized homes - each with three bedrooms, a study room and private gardens - have been designed by local architects Citizens Design Bureau and will be the first in Hackney to reach the ‘Passivhaus’ standard for energy efficient homes that need less energy for heating and cooling.

The terrace replaces a row of underused garages on the Nye Bevan Estate. All will be for Council social rent, with priority given to local residents in the greatest need of a new home.

Local residents from the estate have been heavily involved in shaping the designs of the new homes through a series of workshops run by the architects and the Council.

As part of the proposals, there will be a new pocket park that everyone on the estate can use. The Council also has ambitions to replicate the design of the homes on other small sites elsewhere in the borough.

“Hackney is building hundreds of new Council homes across the borough.

“The Nye Bevan terrace will be the Council's first to be built to Passivhaus standard meaning it will need less energy to provide warm, spacious homes for local families that need them most.

“Despite the rises in the cost of building new homes which is creating great problems for the wider construction industry in London, Hackney Council is determined to get on with planning, building and delivering the new homes that Hackney needs.

“A big thank you to all the residents who put time aside to help the design team shape what are extraordinary new homes for the estate.”

Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member with responsibility for regeneration

It’s fantastic that nine brand-new family-sized homes will be built at Nye Bevan Estate in Hackney thanks to a £2.25 million investment through the Mayor of London's Affordable Homes Programme.

These sustainable, affordable homes at social rent levels will boost the local community and support the Council’s plans to build more than 300 council homes across the borough as we continue to build a better, fairer and more inclusive city for everyone.

Tom Copley, London's Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development

The nine homes on the Nye Bevan Estate are part of the Council’s New Homes Programme, which is bringing forward over 300 new Council homes on underutilised Council owned land. They have been part funded by the Mayor of London's Affordable Home Programme. They are among over 950 Council homes currently being designed, built or bought in Hackney.
