More investment to keep Hackney’s streets clean
Residents will soon see more street sweepers, flytipping removal crews and enforcement officers out keeping Hackney’s streets clean.
The boost in funding comes as part of the Council’s budget for the next financial year. As a result of additional government funding and changes to the way funding is allocated to local authorities, the Council’s core spending power has increased. This means the Council is now in a stronger financial position and is able to allocate more resources to environmental services on a one-off basis, while delivering a balanced budget for 2026/27.
The investment will fund an additional 15 street sweepers, expanding the current team by almost 25%. Street sweepers look after fixed areas, using wheeled hand barrows, equipped with brooms, shovels and bags.
Four additional flytipping removal crews will also join the existing 16 crews, increasing the team by 25% and speeding up the removal of illegally dumped waste.
At the same time, the Council will quadruple the size of its flytipping enforcement team from two to eight officers. This will enable the team to increase investigations and prosecutions, as well as do more to educate residents and businesses about how to manage their waste and recycling to deter people from committing flytipping offences.
The additional funding for street cleaning and flytipping reinforces the Council’s commitment to keeping Hackney’s streets clean, safe and well-maintained.
“Residents can expect to see a marked increase in the visibility of our street cleaning and flytipping crews. This boost in funding means we can put more resources into keeping our streets looking their best, as more and more people live in and visit Hackney.
“But keeping Hackney’s streets clean is a shared responsibility. We’re asking residents to make sure they always dispose of their waste correctly. This is particularly important now, as with our increased enforcement officers out on patrols, you don’t want to get caught out!”
Cllr Sarah Young, Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport
Anyone who witnesses fly-tipping is urged to report it, helping the council take action and keep Hackney clean for everyone.
