More details of Hackney’s celebrations to mark the moment London takes up the Olympic flag have been announced.
Hackney Handover at the Shoreditch Festival on Sunday 24 August, will include events in both Hoxton Street and Shoreditch Park. This will mark the beginning of London’s journey as a host city for the 2012 Games and Hackney’s role as a host borough.
DJ Spoony, of BBC Radio 5 Live and formerly Radio 1, will be on stage in Shoreditch Park to host live dance and entertainment on stage.
Entertainment on stage in the Shoreditch Park will include:
•Local urban dance group Ebonessence
•Giant flag display from Jun Mo, Hackney-based costume parading band
•Free style football skills display with Jeremy Lynch, Britain’s Got Talent finalist
•Hula hoop performance from Hoop La La, Britain’s Got Talent finalists who trained at Circus Space in Hoxton
Visitors can join in many activities in Shoreditch Park, including:
•Sprint competitions to find Hackney’s fastest man, woman and child
•Swingball
•Giant garden games
•Arts and crafts activities
The 1948 Street Party in Hoxton Street will look back at the last time London hosted the Games and will include:
•Vintages stalls and table displays
•Tea parties
•Windrush Dancehall with the sounds of The Calypsonians
•The London Swing Dance Society
Visitors can watch the live Handover moment from Beijing to London broadcast on a big screen in the Park just after 2pm.

Lift will unveil its special Hackney Handover day art commission – Shoreditch Ball Park. Join in games, visit the Oracle and your stories for 2012 (visit www.shoreditchfutures.com for more information).
As a fitting finale to day and to the Shoreditch Festival, BBC Big Band arrives for the Ugly Bugs Ball - a new youth musical on the main stage, swing on by at 6pm and dance until sunset.
Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney, said: “This summer marks the 2012 Games truly becoming London’s as the Beijing Games close and our capital becomes the next host city. Hackney is at the heart of where the Games will happen in just four years and we are making the most of this by working hard to secure the best possible benefits for all Hackney residents.
“Hackney Council is inviting all of our residents to celebrate London becoming the official host for the 2012 Games at Hackney Handover at the Shoreditch Festival. I hope you can join us in this host borough’s welcome to 2012 - our Games.”
