Mayor Woodley welcomes in the new year

Mayor Caroline Woodley reflects on Hackney's greatest strengths

Mayor of Hackney, Caroline Woodley, said:

"This year has already got off to a great start, with highlights including the 25th edition of the Mayor’s Music Awards and the excitement of seeing the next generation of talented young performers on stage at the Hackney Empire. It was also great to witness the support of the dedicated Hackney Music Service team, the excellent stage crew and the brilliant school staff, families and friends all shouting out from the stands!

"Events like this make me reflect on Hackney’s greatest strengths - at the heart of our iconic venues, parks and bustling high streets there’s the unwavering spirit of our community. A community diverse in its cultural heritage, experience and creativity, sometimes joyous, sometimes hard won, and overcoming great adversity.

"That is why I'm incredibly proud that Hackney has made further progress on our ambition to become a Borough of Sanctuary. This isn’t just a title, it is a formal commitment to being a place of safety and welcome for those fleeing violence and persecution. In Hackney we celebrate everyone who makes us who we are.

"We also continue to invest in new homes and local amenities to meet the needs of Hackney residents. I'm very pleased to announce that after a significant refurbishment, Hackney Central Library will reopen its doors on 2 February.

"Our libraries are hubs for reading, learning, connection and community growth. I'm proud of the fact we've managed to not only keep all our libraries open, despite navigating many years of reductions in funding, but that we’re also investing in them as we continue our recovery from austerity.

"Similarly, we continue to focus on the health and wellbeing of our young people. Inside this issue you’ll find details about the new sexual health clinic at The Edge Youth Hub. By bringing vital services directly to where young people feel comfortable, we are ensuring that health and advice are accessible to everyone.

"Hackney is a place that refuses to stand still. We provide sanctuary, support and a stage for world-class talent."
