Mayor Garbett: "We need a government that backs rent controls"

A response from Zoë Garbett, Mayor of Hackney, to the King's Speech 2026.

“The government’s plans in the King’s Speech do nothing to respond to the real pain and problems that Hackney residents are living through day-to-day.

“Here in Hackney, private renters pay eye-watering sums every month, while millions of pounds in public funds are funnelled straight into the pockets of private landlords.

“People are exploited by a housing system built for profit instead of need. And yet the government is once again ignoring the scale of the housing crisis facing our residents, and tearing apart the fabric of our community here in Hackney. We need a government that backs rent controls, funds a new generation of council homes, ends exploitative leasehold practices, and stops selling off council homes through Right-to-Buy.

“People want a government that makes their lives better every day, and last week, people in Hackney called for change. As Mayor of Hackney, I’ll fight to deliver it.”
