Mayor Gabett: Standing in solidarity with the trans community

A statement from Zoë Garbett, Mayor of Hackney, in response to the updated Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) code of practice.

"As Mayor of Hackney, I want to be clear: our borough stands in full solidarity with the trans community.

"Trans people already face stark inequality and discrimination in daily life. This latest development is simply another way to justify further exclusion from public spaces.

"Whilst I encourage Parliament to reject this guidance, we cannot depend upon them to do so. Instead, we must rely on and support each other.

"Hackney is a borough built on diversity, resistance and community. As long as I am Mayor, Hackney Council will continue to support trans people accessing public life to the fullest. We will use every power available to us to support our trans residents, workers and visitors.

"I am now reaching out to trans community organisations to offer my support, and encourage them to reach out to me if there's ways I can help."
