“Losing a game is no excuse”: tackling domestic abuse during the World Cup
Victims of domestic abuse are being urged to seek support with the World Cup 2026 now underway.
With studies showing increases in reports of domestic abuse and instances of alcohol-related domestic abuse around international football tournaments, the Council’s domestic abuse support team is here to help anyone affected by abusive behaviour of any kind during this summer’s tournament.
The Council is also campaigning to ensure perpetrators of domestic abuse understand the harm caused by their actions, with support available to help people change behaviour that is hurting others.
Last year the Council launched its new Eliminating Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Strategy, setting out a bold and comprehensive plan to prevent abuse, support survivors, and build a safer borough for all women and girls in Hackney.
In the last year nearly 1,800 women and girls sought help for domestic abuse in Hackney, a 35% increase reflecting growing awareness and increased support available to victims of domestic abuse.
Since it launched in 2016, Hackney Council’s own domestic abuse team has helped over 12,000 people at risk from domestic abuse.
