Architects have been appointed to work with local residents, businesses and organisations to shape the initial ideas and options for a new development at the Tesco site at 55 Morning Lane in Hackney Central.

North London practice Levitt Bernstein were selected because of their strong record of codesigning successful town centre regeneration and housing developments in Hackney and London.

After it was put up for sale by Tesco in 2017, the Council purchased the Morning Lane site to ensure it could influence what would be built in this key town centre location. Since then it has spent time gathering the views of the community about what any development could provide.

Levitt Bernstein and Climate Labs, an engagement consultancy which specialises in community engagement and codesign, will now set up a series of drop-in workshops, events and walkabouts, where local residents and businesses will be able to share their priorities and ideas for the site and help shape the initial proposals for a new development. This is the first stage of the design process where objectives and ideas gathered will help inform an outline plan for a development on the site.

The workshops begin with a drop in session open to all on 7 December. This session will provide an introduction to the site, an outline of the current timeline, an introduction to the design team led by Levitt Bernstein and an overview of the elements that need to be considered when designing any plans for the site. As the workshops progress in January and February,  the design team will develop up to three design options, which will be reviewed to ensure they are deliverable and reflect the town centre community’s ambitions for the site.

This is an important opportunity for the community to shape what’s built at 55 Morning Lane, a major town centre development site in Hackney Central.

The community and the Council are prioritising the delivery of genuinely affordable housing, workspace and a supermarket as part of the new development.

The Council has heard from thousands of local residents, businesses and organisations about their priorities for Hackney Central and now the design process facilitated by the design team led by Levitt Bernstein can commence, taking those priorities and designing a set of options for us all to look at and shape the future of 55 Morning Lane.

Cllr Guy Nicholson, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Delivery, Inclusive Economy and Regeneration

We are pleased to have been selected by Hackney Council to work on this exciting new project, building on our previous collaborations with the Council. We will be working alongside local design practice Studio Weave and Mott MacDonald Engineers. We look forward to working with all parts of the local community at 55 Morning Lane, an important site to so many in the area.
