Ridley Road Shopping Village

How we’re supporting businesses at Ridley Road Shopping Village

The Mayor of Hackney has requested an urgent meeting with the building’s landlord and the police.

A statement on support for businesses at Ridley Road Shopping Village, after the indoor market’s private landlord said that their leases won’t be extended.

Updated 20 March 2026

“We all want to see Ridley Road Shopping Village thrive, which is why I brought representatives from the businesses, the landlord, the police, Council officers and local councillors together to find a way through the current uncertainty.

“Ridley Road Shopping Village remains privately-owned and managed, and decisions about its future sit not with the Council but with the landlord, Larochette. They have been clear that – while the Community Protection Warning issued by the police doesn’t directly require its closure – they are unable to operate the ground floor of the building as a viable business while applying the safety recommendations set out in the warning.

“At that meeting, Larochette made a commitment to me and to businesses that they would use a temporary closure to speed up long overdue investment in the building, allowing it to reopen and for responsible businesses to return this summer.

“I will do everything I can to hold Larochette to that promise, and continue to offer any support we can to those who face uncertainty in the meantime.”

Previous statement 16 March 2026

“We are here to support businesses at Ridley Road Shopping Village, whose livelihoods have been put at risk after landlord Larochette, the building’s private landlord, informed them that their leases won’t be extended.

“This follows the landlord’s failure to deliver a planned refurbishment of the building, which would have allowed the Council to take over and manage it in the interests of the Dalston community.

“Since becoming aware of the latest developments we have offered businesses in the building discounted pitches at the Council-managed Ridley Road street market, and secured new premises for one business within the shopping village as well as storage space for another.

“I have also requested an urgent meeting with the landlord and the police, and will strongly make the case for additional time and support for businesses affected.

“Meanwhile, we continue to invest in the future of the Ridley Road street market, which has seen over £1m in improvements and recently expanded to operate seven days a week.”
