Chatsworth Road Market-2

Hackney’s historic market is about to get a whole lot more strollable

Chatsworth Road Sunday market is about to be transformed into a fully pedestrianised shopping and eating zone, making it safer, more spacious, and perfect for a Sunday walk.

The new car-free market kicks off with an all-day launch party on Sunday 24 August, 10am–5pm, featuring live music, drumming workshops, sand play areas for kids, as well as its regular array of market stalls and al fresco dining options.

The transformation is part of a Hackney Council project to create streets that are safer, more welcoming, and better for walking, wheeling and cycling.

The much-loved market has a long heritage. Running from Homerton up to Lower Clapton, the high street was built in 1867 to serve the growing East London suburbs. Back in the 1930s, its market ran five days a week, with around 200 stalls. It closed down in the 1990s, but was revived in 2010, and has been growing ever since - now managed by Hackney Council’s award-winning Markets team.

Today, the market is home to over 40 stalls every week selling a range of products from award-winning butchers’ cuts, fresh fish, and organic veg to some of London’s best street food, vintage treasures, handmade beauty products, clothing, and jewellery.

It’s the perfect excuse to spend a Sunday exploring this pocket of Hackney. Plus, it’s just a short stroll from Millfields Park, the River Lee, Lee Valley Park, Hackney Marshes and Sutton House

Starting on Sunday 24 August, Chatsworth Road between Dunlace Road and Blurton Road will be closed to cars from 6am to 8pm to create space for the market. Emergency services, council bin lorries and market traders will still be allowed.

Chatsworth Road Market runs every Sunday, 10am-5pm.

Cllr Fajana-Thomas OBE, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Regulatory Services, said

“Chatsworth Road is a vibrant local market, with a long and proud history of catering to the Clapton community and visitors travelling to enjoy its wares.

“By transforming it into a temporary car-free zone on Sundays, we’re giving people more space to enjoy everything the market has to offer, encouraging people to stay and stroll in a safe and friendly atmosphere.”
