Hackney will always be no place for hate

A joint statement from Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney, and Dawn Carter-McDonald, Chief Executive

In Hackney, we are proudly diverse, inclusive and anti-racist. We celebrate the different faiths and established communities that have made our borough their home, and come together to stand against hate in all its forms.

The so-called ‘free speech rally’ that took place in London this weekend – and the growing hostility around immigration across the UK – is contrary to everything Hackney is as a borough and we stand for as Mayor of Hackney and Chief Executive of Hackney Council.

We know that these events will create fear and anger among Hackney’s communities. That’s why we work with residents, community organisations and faith partners year round to respond to concerns around hate crime, and are deeply committed to becoming a Borough of Sanctuary.

Any person, organisation or campaign whose purpose is to incite hatred, violence and anti-migrant feeling has no place in our borough.

As one of the most diverse populations in the capital, Hackney is strongest when everyone feels represented, included, and respected.

Hackney is, and will always be, no place for hate.
