Hackney urges residents to apply for home energy improvement grants
We’re helping eligible households secure funding to make their homes more energy efficient.
Over 3,000 households in Hackney will receive letters from the Greater London Authority (GLA) encouraging them to apply for the Warm Homes Local Grant, which provides free energy-efficiency improvements for privately owned homes.
Eligible residents could receive free, tailored improvements designed to reduce energy bills and create a healthier, more comfortable living environment. Example energy-efficiency upgrades include insulation, solar panels, ventilation and damp-prevention measures or low-carbon heating systems.
The Warm Homes: Local Grant is funded by the Government Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and delivered in partnership with the Mayor of London, Hackney Council, and service delivery partners
The Council’s role is supporting the scheme by contacting residents they think are likely to be eligible, and providing help with the application and throughout the installation process.
Hackney is one of a small number of London boroughs using a data-led approach to help target the scheme. The GLA shortlisted properties using publicly available information about buildings which are likely to benefit from energy-efficiency improvements and the Council helped identify households likely to meet local low-income criteria.
The programme is part of the Council’s work to ensure people in Hackney live in warm, healthy and energy-efficient homes, which are cheaper to heat and more environmentally friendly.
“This is government funding for residents on low income to get free home improvements like insulation, smart controls, solar panels and heat pumps.
“Our job is to make sure the people who need this support can access it. That’s why we’ve helped identify more than 3,000 households we think may be eligible, and are here to support residents through the application process.
“If you’ve received a letter, we encourage you to check the eligibility criteria and apply. If you haven’t received a letter but think you might be eligible, check out the guidelines and apply too.”
Cllr Jacob Cable, Cabinet Member for Climate, Clean Air, Energy and Transport
Letters will be sent to around 500 properties at a time in the coming months.
Residents are likely to be eligible for the grant if they are on low income, live in a privately owned home (including if they’re renting a home owned by a private landlord), with an Energy Performance Certificate of D, E, F or G, and have £25,000 or less in savings.
Residents who do not receive a letter but think they may be eligible can apply. Applicants should check they meet the full eligibility criteria before applying.
