Hackney residents' green investments go further with a major funding boost
Residents investing in Hackney’s Green Investment opportunity will now see their money go even further to support local climate action, thanks to a new funding agreement with two major financial backers.
Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, one of the UK’s leading social impact investors, has committed £1 million over the next two years to match-fund investments made by local people in council green investments. For every £1,000 invested by residents, Esmée will add £500, helping to accelerate projects that reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency across the borough.
Unity Trust Bank, a purpose-driven UK bank focused on social and environmental impact, has committed an initial £15 million to support local authorities’ climate projects - the first time a UK bank has invested in this type of green finance. They will also be investing into Hackney Green Investment, alongside residents.
Hackney’s Green Investment programme gives residents the opportunity to invest directly in local sustainability projects, while earning a fixed 4.2% annual interest over five years. Projects supported so far include energy-saving windows at Morningside Primary School, solar panels on the Whiston Estate, and building upgrades that help lower bills for residents and reduce carbon emissions.
To date, the Council has raised over £1 million, including £165,000 from Hackney residents, towards its target of £5 million by 2030.
“Hackney is proud to have one of the most ambitious climate action programmes in the country. Thanks to this innovative match-funding agreement, our residents' support will now go even further, helping us install more solar panels and energy-efficient windows on local schools and estates, reducing energy bills and carbon emissions, and delivering greater benefits for a greener, healthier Hackney.
“This pioneering partnership will continue to build confidence in the value of this low-risk, high-impact investment model that is helping councils like ours deliver on our essential climate goals, even within today’s financial constraints.”
Cllr Sarah Young, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport
“It’s inspiring to see so many residents supporting local climate action with Hackney’s Green Investment, and thanks to this generous match funding, their impact will now go even further.
“We’re delighted to have the support of Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Unity Trust Bank, helping us reach our ambitious goals for a greener, healthier Hackney. Plus, with the match funding for this first wave available until the end of May, there’s still time to get involved and maximise your investment.”
Cllr Robert Chapman, Cabinet Member for Finance, Insourcing and Customer Service
