Hackney recognises the contribution of His Majesty’s Forces on Armed Forces Day

Hackney paid tribute to the brave service people in the British Armed Forces with a ceremony on Armed Forces Day.

The borough commemorated Armed Forces Day on Saturday 28 June by paying tribute to the brave men and women who serve in the British Armed Forces.

Representatives from units and cadets in Hackney including members of Hackney’s Salvation Army, 3 Military Intelligence Battalion, London Cadets, RAF Air Cadets, Sea Cadets and the Hackney Memorable Order of Tin Hats, assembled in front of Hackney Town Hall to hear the playing of a lone bugler, and witness the traditional flag raising ceremony.

The troops were addressed by Stephen Howlett CBE DL, Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Hackney, and Past Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Sheila Suso-Runge, before certificates were presented to selected troops and cadets in recognition of their exceptional service.

Armed Forces Day takes place every year on the last Saturday in June to acknowledge the dedication and efforts of those who serve in the Armed Forces.

“Armed Forces Day is a moment to reflect on the brave people who have and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Today is our chance as a community to acknowledge their service and to celebrate all that is good about our Military and its commitment to the people of this country.”

Past Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Sheila Suso-Runge

“Armed Forces Day gives us an opportunity to show support for the men and women who make up the armed forces community. That is, not only those troops currently serving, but also the veterans who served in the country’s time of need. I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to all the current and former servicemen and women in Hackney for their valuable dedication and work.”
