Hackney Mortuary temporarily closed for refurbishment

The Hackney Public Mortuary has been temporarily closed as part of a nearly £2 million project to modernise and improve the existing service. 

Improvements will include expanding capacity, installing more energy efficient fridges and improving the family viewing areas.

As the current mortuary is in need of extensive modernisation, services will be relocated to St Pancras until the end of 2024 while the building work is being carried out.

The temporary arrangements of the mortuary have been agreed with the Human Tissues Authority and the local coronial district. 

The Hackney Public Mortuary provides an essential service to local communities by:

● storing the deceased pending a funeral 

● providing facilities for family members to view the deceased 

● facilitating the operation of the coronial process undertaking a postmortem 

● ensuring the legal requirements of the Public Health Act 1984 are met including that the decease are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their circumstances.

This demonstrates our commitment to upgrading a heritage building as well ensuring that we have a local mortuary that is fit for the future and convenient for our residents when they need it most.
