Hackney launches major rollout of rapid EV charge points

A new network of rapid electric vehicle (EV) charge points is underway in Hackney.

Nine new EV rapid chargers are now live across the borough, marking the start of a major rollout that will see more than 50 rapid chargers introduced by 2030.

The expansion is part of Hackney Council’s mission to make access to cleaner vehicles more convenient, helping drivers prepare for the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles.

The new ESB Energy chargers are among the fastest currently available in the borough. They have a power output of up to 100kW, enabling 30-minute recharges.

Eligible Hackney residents with EV parking permits can benefit from discounted charging rates through a new Hackney Light and Power plan, available via the ESB Energy EV Plug In app.

The plan, which was designed specifically to support residents who cannot access a home charger, includes a heavily discounted overnight rapid charging rate between 1am and 5am, and a preferential charging day rate on all local Hackney rapid chargers.

The new rapid chargers are being delivered in partnership with ESB Energy, which owns and operates a growing network of fast and rapid chargers across London, Birmingham and Coventry as well as ultra rapid charging hubs throughout Great Britain. The chargers use 100% renewable energy and will be installed in existing parking bays.

The charging bays are set up to make charging quick and easy, particularly for larger vehicles such as delivery vans and commercial vehicles, and drivers with accessibility needs, with additional space and easier access from both the road and pavement.

Hackney has already been recognised as London’s best area for EV charging by The Solar Co, due to its dense coverage and rapid expansion of the infrastructure. More than 1,500 charge points have been installed to date, marking the halfway point in the Council’s plan to deploy 3,000 chargers by 2030.

ESB Energy rapid charge points are now available at the following locations, with more sites launching soon:

  • 47 Downham Road, De Beauvoir
  • 96 Downham Road, De Beauvoir*
  • 224 Crozier Terrace, Hackney Wick

  • Alexandra Grove, Brownswood
  • 87 Stoke Newington Church Street, Stoke Newington

“This is a huge step forward in expanding our electric vehicle charging network. By rolling out rapid chargers across the borough, we’re supporting more residents and businesses to consider switching to electric vehicles. And this means cleaner air and quieter streets for everyone.

“Our discounted night-time tariff goes even further, supporting people who have to drive for work with access to fast and affordable charging, and helping remove barriers to going electric.”

Cllr Sarah Young, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport

“We’re proud to partner with Hackney Council to deliver a new generation of accessible, rapid EV chargers across the borough—powered entirely by 100% renewable energy. Reliable charging infrastructure is essential to accelerating the shift to cleaner transport, and we’re committed to supporting Hackney in building a future-ready EV network that serves residents, businesses, and the wider community.”
