Hackney Council launches ‘zero tolerance’ crackdown on rogue landlords

From this month, Hackney Council will be seeking the biggest fines and strongest possible penalties for the worst private landlords in Hackney. This marks the start of a zero-tolerance approach towards rogue landlords who exploit tenants and leave residents in substandard, unsafe and often dangerous living conditions.

The Council has kicked off this new enforcement drive by fining a single landlord £30,000 for failing to address fire safety concerns. This action serves as a warning to landlords who fail to meet their legal responsibilities, as the Council says it will use every power available to hold them to account. 

Through a combination of the Renters Rights Act (RRA) and its new landlord licensing scheme, the Council is intensifying its effort to penalise those who put profit before people. It has also set up a new, beefed up enforcement team of more than 50 officers to investigate and take action against substandard conditions. 

“Landlords are putting profit before people. Too many renters pay eye watering sums, only to live in unsafe homes. 

“This has got to stop. From this month, we’re ramping up our inspections and seeking the biggest fines and strongest possible penalties for the worst private landlords in Hackney. It’s time our justice system was made to work for us.

The new landlord licensing measures, introduced earlier this year, will allow for Council officers to inspect properties and crack down on the hidden exploitation that exists within the private sector.

The Council is also encouraging all private renters to know your rights, and urging all tenants who are facing substandard conditions to come forward and report their landlords.
