Hackney Council announces its programme of events for LGBT History Month

Hackney Council celebrates LGBT History month with a line-up of performances, exhibitions, drag, walks, talks, zine making and more. The programme reflects on LGBT history and makes space for new histories to be created. 

The programme was curated through the HACKNEY PRIDE365 grant awards scheme and has supported 15 artists or organisations to deliver work across Hackney throughout February 2024. 

The events and activities, include:

  • ‘The Queer History of You Through Movement’, a practical movement workshop that explores queer identity through dance with Ballet Queer and Shoreditch Town Hall.
     
  • An afternoon of film screenings and interactive workshops "Pride and Protest in the Cost of Living Crisis” with Stonewall Housing at Rio Cinema.
     
  • Queer Tours of London's walking tours of historic Stoke Newington.
     
  • A celebration of Bloolips radical drag theatre company with founding member Lavinia Co-op, curated by Unfinished Histories. 
     
  • ‘JUST COPING 25’ an exhibition by autonomous operational cell at VFD Gallery documenting and commemorating an irreverent, hybrid, Queer arts event that took place in Hackney twenty-five years earlier.
     
  • ‘Beautiful Bride in the City’, Leo Costelloe’s first moving image work, starring Chris Owen as The Bride at Kupfer.

This programme is a testament to the talent and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ communities and artists in Hackney. It spans artforms, genres and venues bringing together 16 events and/or programmes from 15 awards in one line-up. Together the events weave together LGBTQIA+ histories, both old and new alike. The work is exciting, provocative and joyful, and highlights the intersectional contexts artists and makers are working in. Get involved, come and see a show, enjoy a workshop or exhibition, or even get your body moving through dance, there is something for everyone.
