Allen Pharmacy with their cargo bike

Cargo bike grants up to £2,500 for businesses now available

Businesses in Hackney can now apply for funding to buy a cargo bike.

A Workplace Travel Grant from the Zero Emissions Network (ZEN) has re-launched, offering businesses across five north London boroughs up to £2,500 funding for sustainable transport.

Applications that will help businesses switch from a diesel or petrol vehicle to a cargo bike are particularly encouraged.

The grants are designed to help businesses reduce transport costs, cut emissions and improve local air quality. Alongside funding towards the cost of a cargo bike, successful applicants will also receive training, bespoke advice and ongoing support from the ZEN.

The funding comes from the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund, and is being managed by the ZEN, an award-winning, free-to-join initiative operating across five boroughs. With over 2,000 members, the network offers a range of support including grants, training and trials to help residents and businesses switch to low emission transport.

“With our cargo bike, it gave us wonderful flexibility and power to navigate around London streets to deliver our products.

“We absolutely love the bike, and since purchasing it, we ride it to deliver our products to customers like Selfridges, Nobu hotel, Kew Gardens, Google HQ, DELLI, Fortnum and Masons, Wasabi and UCL Universities.”

Businesses or organisations in Hackney, Westminster, Tower Hamlets, Newham and the City of London are eligible.

They must register to be a member of the ZEN to apply. It is completely free to be part of the network.

Previous grant recipients, including Tasker Construction and Allen Pharmacy, switched to cargo bikes for their transport and deliveries, cutting costs and increasing the speed and flexibility of their services.

Anyone who is interested in learning more about cargo bikes and sustainable transport can attend the ZEN’s Sustainable Transport Expo 2026 at The Art Pavilion in Mile End on Tuesday 30 June, 3.30-6pm.

“Cargo bikes are a revolutionary mode of transport for businesses in London. With storage boxes, people carriers and the option of electric motors, you can transport bulky loads or deliveries, often more quickly and efficiently than using a motorcycle or van.

“Plus, with rising instability in fossil fuel markets, it is businesses who make the transition today that will feel the most significant benefits as climate resilience becomes core to business viability in the coming years and decades.

“That’s why we’re making it as easy as possible for businesses to adopt more sustainable transport options and join the already-growing network of cargo bikes in Hackney.”

Cllr Jacob Cable, Cabinet Member for Climate, Clean Energy, Air and Transport
