Bhangra dancing comes to Hackney!

BHANGRA dancing sessions begin in February, as part of a move by Hackney Council and NHS City & Hackney to help keep the borough s over-50s fit and healthy.

The free exercise classes in the popular dance style start on 24 February, running from 12.30-1.30pm at Kings Hall Leisure Centre, Lower Clapton Road, for 10 weeks.

More than 100 languages are spoken in Hackney, including Gujerati, Bengali, Punjabi, and Urdu, and it is hoped these sessions will appeal not only to older residents from South Asian communities, but also those of all backgrounds.

Soca dance classes are set to begin at Queensbridge Sports and Community Centre on Tuesdays, 11am-12noon; at Britannia Leisure Centre on Wednesdays, 2.30-3.30pm; and Kings Hall Leisure Centre on Thursdays, 9.30-10.30am, with each session costing £1.70.

The Soca sessions will run for 12 weeks as part of the Our Best Ability programme of activities for older residents, funded by NHS City and Hackney, Healthy Communities Team and organised by Hackney Council.

Cllr Nargis Khan, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: "Hackney Council is committed to enabling older people to live as independently as possible for as long as possible.

"Exercise can play an important role in this, and needn t be a drudge, it can be exciting and fun like these sessions. Hackney has recently received a top rating from the Government for adult social care, including for excellent work to keep our older residents fit and healthy."
