BeRecreative recycling fun day

A free, fun packed, family event is being held in London Fields on Saturday 7 June as part of national Recycle Week and the Love London Festival.

The BeRecreative event is a joint effort between Hackney Council’s recycling team and Green Champion network.

Building on the success of last year’s event, this year BeRecreative promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Kids can get busy making musical instruments from recycled materials, creating their own toys at the ‘junk journeys’ stall, and getting involved with various ‘green games’.

A ‘give or take’ area will let residents bring unwanted items and swap them for others. Cutting down on the amount of packaging you use is made easier at the ‘Be unpackaged’ stall – bring your own container to stock up on whole foods, dried fruits and nuts. And top up your empty eco-friendly washing up liquid bottles at the refill station.

There will be hot organic food on sale as well as a licensed bar. Create your own organic drink with the smoothie bike. Alternatively, bring your own picnic.

The Bike Doctor will be on hand to offer advice to cyclists on maintaining their bicycles. And live bands will create a soundtrack to the day.

Councillor Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
“The BeRecreative event is a fun way for everyone to get involved, find out more and see how their contributions can help to reuse, recycle and reduce waste in Hackney. Recycling is a priority for the Council. We are committed to improving our local environment and making the borough a cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit.”

Green Champion, Beck Dabscheck, said: “BeRecreative is a great way to make environmental awareness fun and find out how easy it is. There are small things we can all do that make a big difference. It’s all about the Hackney community taking responsibility for our own environment.”

BeRecreative will be held on Saturday 7 June from 12noon-6pm in London Fields, E8. For more information, call the recycling hotline on: 020 8356 6688 or visit: www.hackney.gov.uk/recycling
