Mobile pool comes to Hackney
Hackney residents young and old have the chance to swim in a mobile pool at Northwold Primary School. The pool is open until December and has classes ranging from beginners lessons to women only sessions.
Residents, schools and community groups have the chance to take advantage of swimming somewhere other than one of Hackney’s four pools while the pool visits a Hackney school for the first time. The mobile pool is open from 9am – 3.30pm for school swimming and from 4pm – 6pm for children’s lessons, and from 6pm for adults learning to swim and other community groups.
Courses are split into two six week sessions running from 13 September and 1 November. Participants swim once a week at the same time and classes are available for children and adults; the under 5’s must be accompanied by an adult. The courses are suitable for beginners and are a great opportunity to introduce babies to the water or brush up on technique.
Kim Wright, Director of Community Services said: "We want to encourage as many people as possible to take up swimming and we are committed to making it as convenient and affordable as we can. The Council already offers free swimming to residents under 18 and over 60 at our pools. This scheme, which brings a pool to a local primary school means even more of our residents, young and old can give swimming a go.”
The mobile pool is part of Make a Splash London, and is funded by Hackney Council, Play Sport London, Amateur Swimming Association, City and Hackney NHS and private sponsors.
Jo Melchior, Project Manager explained: "Here at Make a Splash we are really passionate about the benefits of swimming. We want to reach out to all those Hackney residents who may be scared or have had a negative experience in water to let our friendly patient teachers introduce you to how much fun swimming can be."

Children: 30 minute classes, Monday to Friday 4pm to 6pm or Saturday 10am to 12 noon.
Adults: 45 minute classes, Monday to Friday 6pm to 8.30pm or Saturday 12 noon
