Improving road safety and reducing congestion on Manor Road

Parking bays are set to be removed to improve bus journey times

A number of parking spaces are set to be removed on Manor Road in Stoke Newington to help reduce congestion at a key pinch point and improve bus journey times.

The measures are in response to longstanding congestion at the Bethune Road corner of Manor Road, where buses are regularly caught in traffic as they struggle to pass rows of parked cars.

They are part of a borough-wide plan to prioritise buses, but also sit alongside plans for the Manor Road area, where speeding and uncontrolled parking are known to be issues.

A stage one consultation on a new parking zone in the area was supported by 63% of residents. If approved by Cabinet and a second stage consultation, a new parking zone in the area would help to reduce traffic congestion and prioritise parking for local residents in and around Manor Road.

The Council is also set to investigate further public realm improvements in the area, which could include more tree planting and environmental improvements.

The measures being introduced in the area will also help to mitigate any potential impacts on traffic from the Stoke Newington low traffic neighbourhood, set to be implemented on Monday 20 September.

The Council has modelled the impact of the Stoke Newington LTN on Manor Road, which it and Transport for London do not expect to be significant, with Transport for London approving the Stoke Newington scheme taking into account the impact it would have on bus and other journey times in the surrounding area.

Following the introduction of the Stoke Newington LTN, Transport for London will also monitor and amend signal timings in the area to ensure that any impact on journey times are minimal.

These measures for residents in and around Manor Road are part of a wider plan to prioritise bus journeys in the borough by removing parking spaces at key pinch points.

There’s more in the pipeline - with the recent consultation on controlled parking in Stamford Hill supported by 63% of residents. We also want to speak to local residents about what else we can do to reduce speeding and make it a more pleasant place to spend time.

While the Stoke Newington low traffic neighbourhood is not expected to have a significant impact on Manor Road, we’re implementing these measures ahead of time to minimise the impact on bus and other journey times.
