Homes for Hoxton: more than 100 new properties approved

Derelict garages and car parks in Hoxton will be transformed into more than 100 new homes after the latest plans in Hackney Council’s ambitious housebuilding programme were approved.

Council-owned land in Wimbourne Street will be redeveloped into 59 new homes, with garages in Buckland Street also demolished to make way for 54 new properties – with more than 60% for genuinely affordable social rent and shared ownership.

The proposals, which were agreed by the Council’s Planning Committee last night, were shaped by local residents during more than two years of consultation. Local council tenants in housing need will have first dibs on the new Council homes.

All of the homes will be built by Hackney Council, acting as its own developer on its own land – part of thousands of new homes being built by the Council in response to the borough’s housing crisis. More than 1,000 homes have already been completed since the programme began in 2011, with over half for social rent, living rent or shared ownership.

These plans have been shaped by local people – who will also be the first to benefit from these desperately needed homes.

The project at Wimbourne Street will deliver 22 homes for social rent and 11 for shared ownership, with 26 for outright sale to help pay for them in the absence of government funding for social housing. The plans also include a new commercial space on New North Road, as well as new green spaces and a play area.

At Buckland Street, 22 homes for social rent and 14 for shared ownership will be built, alongside 18 homes for outright sale. A new ball court, children’s play area and commercial space will also be provided.

Plans for a further 73 homes on the nearby Fairbank Estate – including 28 homes for social rent – have also been submitted.
