Hackney’s Youth Sports Fund helps more young sports stars
Hackney Council’s Youth Sport Fund, has helped yet another young athlete, 16 year old Louis Modell a talented young cyclist, who has the potential to become Hackney’s very own Bradley Wiggins!.
Louis has been working one to one with a dedicated coach and recently won an E/1/2 race series, which is the highest amateur men's category - quite an achievement for a youth rider. Louis was one of fifteen riders asked to attend a selection event for the British Cycling Team. He has also been invited to take part in the Olympic Development Programme World Cup. This is a talent team training camp where he will be riding with and against members of the youth and junior GB squad.
Louis, who lives near Well Street Common, was delighted with his Youth Sport Fund Award, he said: "The money will help towards travel and entry fees for the National Youth Circuit Series around the country from May to September. It will also go towards the cost of taking part in the Youth Tour of Scotland which I will be competing during April with a team of three other youth riders from North London”.
Rob Sharman of British Cycling said “Louis is a very ambitious and determined individual and this is complemented by a talent for the sport of cycling”.
Eight other talented young people are also receiving support this time around and are represented from a range of sports including boxing; cricket and basketball. In addition three community sports clubs were awarded funding to assist in the development of local young people.
Hackney Council's Cabinet Member for Health Social Care and Culture, Councillor Jonathan McShane said: “I'm very proud that the Council can support talented young athletes with their sporting dreams. I’m sure that we’ll be seeing some of these talented young people in future Olympic Games.”
