Hackney's new Speaker set to make a mark

Cllr Anya Sizer became the new Speaker of Hackney, after being elected at the Council’s Annual General Meeting last week.

As a Councillor for Hoxton East and Shoreditch, Hackney resident for two decades, musicals lover, mother of three and a dog, an active campaigner for children, families and women's rights, Cllr Sizer is set to make a mark as this year’s new Speaker.

With over 15 years experience in the fertility and adoption sector, the Speaker will have a special focus on championing families who care for children with SEN adoption and foetal alcohol spectrum disorder during her time in office. In support of this work Cllr Sizer currently trains companies and organisations in how to best support their teams facing fertility issues.

Cllr Sizer will also support three charities: St Joseph's Hospice, Hoxton Hall and Ministry of Stories. Additionally, Cllr Sizer is also an ambassador for Saying Goodbye who support mother’s going through miscarriages and infant loss, as well as Home for Good  who are a charity dedicated to finding a home for every child through adoption, fostering or supported living.

It is a huge privilege to take on the role of Hackney Speaker. Hackney is a borough full of diversity, determination and compassion and I hope to echo that during my time in office.

I want to particularly highlight topics of fertility and adoption that are often underrepresented and champion the needs of our children, families and young women in particular; supporting them to step into their potential and leadership roles. I want to thank everyone for their support and for trusting me with this role, I can’t wait to get started.

Cllr Anya Sizer, Speaker of Hackney

Supporting Cllr Anya Sizer in her duties will be Deputy Speaker Sheila Suso-Runge.
