Hackney’s frontline heroes celebrated at care worker awards ceremony
Care workers who have gone above and beyond to provide help and support to vulnerable residents in care homes and the community through the coronavirus crisis were honoured at an online awards ceremony last week.
Over 130 care workers were nominated for the fourth annual Hackney Care Worker Awards by their employers and the residents who they care for. The ceremony recognised the vital role played by carers in combating isolation and loneliness throughout the pandemic, particularly as many residents have been unable to receive visits from family and friends. The support, care and comfort that care workers have provided during this difficult time was reflected in the nomination forms sent in by residents.
A total of 30 care workers were shortlisted for the awards, which took place on Tuesday 24 November 2020. Ten finalists were revealed at the ceremony, which was hosted by Cllr Chris Kennedy, Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and Leisure. The awards were split into two categories: Care and Support in the Home and Care and Support in the Wider Community. The winner and runner up in each category will receive trophies and all shortlisted care workers will receive certificates to celebrate their work.
Care workers and those they provide care for usually enjoy afternoon tea at Hackney Town Hall during the awards ceremony. To ensure that this year’s nominated carers don’t miss out, the Council has arranged for the ten finalists to have afternoon tea delivered to their houses.
Carole Brown, who won the Care and Support in the Home award, said: “It was a great honour to be nominated. All I can say is that everyday, even with these awards, the only reward I need is knowing that when I go home at night time all my clients are happy and that hopefully I give them a better quality of life. I would like to say a big thank you to the organisers of the awards.”

But this year more than any other, our care workers have gone above and beyond in their duties and provided much-needed support, comfort and care to our residents during what has been an incredibly challenging time for both them and the residents they care for.
I would like to congratulate all the winners, runners up and nominees – but most importantly pay a huge thank you to every single care worker in Hackney for their dedication and commitment throughout this crisis.
