An audience from across the borough celebrated the start of the festive season with the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights at the Hackney Town Hall this weekend.

The Hackney Community Choir warmed-up the crowd with a choice selection of festive carols before the anticipated lights switch-on.Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Sade Etti, was joined by characters from the Hackney Empire panto, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ to switch-on the lights and launch the countdown to Christmas in a borough full of free entertainment and activities across its town centres and markets.

The Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Sade Etti,
It was fantastic to join with Hackney residents and characters from the Empire panto ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ to celebrate the start of the festive season with the annual lights switch-on. This year’s design for Hackney Central is wonderful, and really adds to the wintery, festive feel of the borough. I hope all local people have a fantastic December and enjoy the many events, activities and experiences that Hackney has to offer.
The Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Sade Etti,

The Hackney Central Christmas tree is again joined by four other trees located across the borough’s town centres (Stoke Newington, Hackney Wick, Shoreditch and Dalston) which are adorned in unique decorations. Always a talking point, residents are being encouraged to express their opinions on this year’s designs on Twitter or Facebook using the hashtag #MakeHackneySparkle.

Listed online using www.hackney.gov.uk/christmas, and in this month’s free Hackney Today paper, are a collection of other festive-themed events taking place across the borough such as free film screening for the family, late-night and themed shopping events, special market days and a whole lot else for all ages.
