Hackney’s Christmas lights set to bring some festive cheer

Xmas1

Hackney residents are invited to gather at Town Hall Square from 4-5pm on Sunday 4 December to celebrate the switching on of the borough’s Christmas lights and kick off the festive season.

Stars from Hackney Empire’s pantomime Mother Goose, along with Hackney Speaker Cllr Humaira Garasia, will be leading the countdown before turning on the lights.

The free, family-friendly event includes live music from Pantonic Steel Orchestra, Hackney Empire Community Choir and singer Nina Hudson who will perform carols and other festive favourites to help get Hackney into the Christmas spirit.

I can’t wait to join everyone in welcoming in the holiday season together, in true Hackney style. I invite all residents to come down to Town Hall Square to enjoy the Christmas lights, the fantastic seasonal performances and help spread some festive cheer.

Cllr Humaira Garasia, Speaker of Hackney

Hackney’s festive celebrations continue from 6-6:30pm on Sunday 18 December with a ceremony for the illumination of the Menorah, led by Rabbi Herschel Gluck OBE, to signal the start of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. The special 12ft Menorah will stand next to Hackney Town Hall for seven days.

Hackney Money Hub advisors will also be in the square from 3.30pm to 5:30pm to provide advice to any residents that may be experiencing financial difficulties. Hackney Council is offering help to residents least able to manage soaring energy bills and everyday costs with a £5m million winter support package. More information on the help available to manage the rising cost of living is available here.
