Hackney’s Christmas lights set to bring festive cheer

Hackney is ready to welcome in the holiday season with the annual switching on of the borough’s Christmas lights on Sunday 3rd December.

Residents are invited to gather at Town Hall Square from 4.00 - 5.30pm to see stars from Hackney Empire’s Aladdin and Hoxton Hall's Little Mermaid pantomimes light up Mare Street and launch the festive celebrations.

The free, family-friendly event, compared by esteemed drag artist Topsie Redfern, features Christmas carols, seasonal favourites and other live music from Hackney Empire Community Choir, Hackney Senior Vocal Ensemble, Pantonic Steel Pan Orchestra and Coro de Clave Afro-Cuban choir.

Illuminated costumes from Tropical Isles carnival group and a parade of handmade lanterns by pupils from Mandeville Primary School will also be on display to get Hackney into the Christmas spirit.

I can’t wait to celebrate the start of the festive season with the rest of the borough. After what I know has been a challenging year for many, I hope as many residents as possible can join us at Town Hall Square to enjoy the Christmas lights, the amazing performances, and help spread some holiday cheer.

Cllr Anya Sizer, Speaker of Hackney

I am delighted to celebrate the festive season together with the borough’s residents and visitors. As we bring one year to a close and look towards the next, I wish everyone a happy and restful holiday season, and all the best for the coming year.

Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney
