Hackney to receive £11,500 for Windrush Generations Festival 2020

Hackney's Windrush Generations Festival 2020 is full steam ahead thanks to a Windrush Day funding award of £11,500 from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The grant will see communities across the country share £500,000 to host events marking the second national Windrush Day on and around 22 June 2020. 

After the success of last year’s festival which saw Hackney win top prize in the Hearts for the Arts award for ‘Community Cohesion’ and global recognition at Apolitical’s Global Public Service Team of the Year awards, plans are now underway to create another fantastic series of events to honour and collaborate with Hackney’s Windrush communities. Hackney’s festival will complement the UK-wide celebration which pays tribute to the outstanding legacy of the British Caribbean community. 

Hackney’s Windrush 2020 festival will be programmed throughout June and on National Windrush day of 22 June. It will build on last year’s exciting program which saw intergenerational tea parties, cricket matches, a parade and baking days across the borough. This year’s plans include a new ‘Windrush Day Schools Competition’ to take Windrush history and culture into schools and connect the past to the present. Community groups will be invited to contribute fresh ideas and will be funded via microgrants to produce events in the community. The call for proposals to the community will launch in April.

Hackney is among the 10 local authorities and 49 organisations across the UK will have been awarded funds to mark Britain’s second national Windrush Day. Organisations hosting events will celebrate, commemorate and educate communities on the role the Windrush generation and their descendants have played in making Britain stronger.

National Windrush Day was announced as June 22 to mark the anniversary of the arrival of MV Empire Windrush at the Port of Tilbury, near London, on the same day in June 1948. The arrival of the Empire Windrush marked a seminal moment in Britain’s history and Hackney Council are committed to honouring it as an annual occasion as part of their cultural calendar.
