Hackney families enjoy community fun day

Milton Gardens Estate, in Stoke Newington, was buzzing with activity on Saturday as residents came together to enjoy a community fun day organised by Hackney Homes.

Over 130 residents took time out to mingle with their neighbours at the event and enjoy the tasty BBQ food and healthy sample food on offer. Young people enjoyed the music provided by a local DJ, while younger children had fun on the large bouncy castle. Adults took the opportunity to gain some valuable advice on financial support and employment, with many registering their interest for the various volunteering opportunities available within the organisation.

As well as a host of local charities and health organisations, Hackney Homes and Hackney Council officers were at hand to provide information about services including repairs, recycling and reporting anti-social behaviour.

Residents found out about how they could get involved in estate projects run by Hackney Homes and their local tenant resident associations (TRA) and had the chance to have their say on the future of Hackney, in the Council’s biggest-ever consultation called ‘Hackney: A place for everyone’.

Milton Gardens Estate TRA, Committee Member, Anthony Rogers, said: “This event is brilliant. It’s good for the kids and for everyone…”

Hackney resident, Shelia Simon, said: “It’s a nice idea to get the residents from the estate out. They should do it every summer.”

Cllr Philip Glanville, Cabinet Member for Housing
It’s fantastic that so many residents enjoyed the day. Community initiatives such as fun days, go a long way in bringing people together and building strong community ties and this is the reason why Hackney Homes’ fun days are so important and popular with residents.

Three additional fun day events will take place across the borough on: 21 August at Fellows Court, Weymouth Estate, Haggerston; and 28 August at Clapton Park Estate, Lower Clapton
