Hackney Council to reopen Murray Grove Post Office in partnership with local chemist
Hackney Council is due to reopen Murray Grove Post office by the end of November.
It has chosen a partner to help it reopen the service - Chandrakant Patel of Murray’s Chemist, Murray Grove.
Mr Patel has moved his current chemist shop into the Post Office premises and is due to offer post office services by the end of November.
The Council has worked to reopen the Post Office following public consultation last summer showed there was strong support among residents and local businesses. It was closed in June 2008 as part of the Post Office Network Change Programme.
Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney, said: “We’re pleased to have found a partner who we believe will bring the right business skills and experience to run the Post Office successfully.
“Residents and local businesses, supported by their local councillors, have told us the closure has affected the way they go about daily tasks such as using postal services, paying rent and bills, and receiving benefits and pensions.
“Once the Post Office reopens, residents and businesses will need to support it by using it regularly to ensure the Council can keep it open for them in the long-term.”
The Post Office will offer a range of postal and banking services, as well as other financial services such as foreign exchange and the sale of premium bonds. The Post Office will initially be funded by the Council for up to five years, with a review after two years to assess levels of use and financial viability.
