Hackney Carnival is back for 2022 and you can be part of it

Hackney Carnival, one of the nation’s largest carnival events, returns to our streets in 2022 with what we hope will be its most exciting line up yet, and is looking for residents to get involved to help make this year’s celebration bigger and better than ever before.

After Covid-19’s disruption to the in-person event two years running, residents and visitors will once again be able to enjoy live music, spectacular costumes and energetic dancing when thousands of performers take to the borough’s streets on Sunday 11 September. This year’s carnival is already highly anticipated by those who will have missed the popular annual celebration, with many carnival and community groups expected to take part in the parade, and music to be provided by sound systems from around the world.

Since 2019, with Hackney Carnival put on hold due to coronavirus, residents have instead had the opportunity to experience the Carnival collectives and sound systems from home, through an online Gala event at Hackney Empire, live music streams, dance routine videos and workshops.

Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville

I’m thrilled to announce that Hackney Carnival will be back on the borough’s streets this September. The return of Carnival will be a real chance for us to come back together after the pandemic and display the inclusivity and talent that makes Hackney so special. Even in the pandemic, and facing the challenges of lockdown restrictions, the online Hackney Carnival at Home brought people together to promote Hackney’s proud diversity and showcase the extraordinary creativity of its residents.

Now I encourage anyone who has ever wanted to be part of it or who has taken part before to get involved and help make this our best carnival ever. We believe that, with your help, 2022’s parade can be our loudest and most colourful celebration yet.
