Hackney continues to receive horticultural plaudits, picking up six awards in the borough’s best ever results for its parks and open spaces at this year’s prestigious London in Bloom awards.

For the second year Hackney has received the silver gilt award for the borough overall. There were also accolades for individual locations around the borough, including first place for Well Street Common in the commons award; silver gilt award for Springfield Park and bronze for Haggerston Park in the large park category; silver for Clapton Pond in the recreation ground / small park category; and third place for Mabley Green Community Meadow in the community garden award.

The contest supports and encourages gardening, horticulture and environmental sustainability across the London boroughs. Judges visited Hackney in the summer and were impressed with the general standard of maintenance in the parks and open spaces as well as the community involvement.

Councillor Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Congratulations to all the staff, user groups, residents and businesses who have helped Hackney achieve its best ever result in the London in Bloom competition. It shows how much pride we are all taking in our local environment while making the borough more attractive for those who live, work or visit in the area.”
