Go Green for Valentines day
Every Valentine’s Day, millions of people will send tokens of love to their nearest and dearest
It’s important to show a bit of TLC to the environment, whilst still making our loved ones feel special.
With a little planning, everyone can find the perfect gift that will bring joy to their sweetheart while protecting the planet.
Cllr Alan Laing, Hackney Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
“With around twelve million Valentine’s cards sent every year in the UK, Valentines can produce a lot of waste. This year show the one you love how much you care for them by having a greener Valentine’s day”
Top tips
- Send a special Valentine’s e-card or text message – they are good for the environment and for your pocket (especially if you have more than one secret love!)
- Remember to recycle your cards in your Green Box if you live in a street level property
- Chose a card made from recycled materials, or make one yourself
- Don’t like soft centres? Recycle unwanted chocolates in your Blue Box kitchen waste collection – or compost them
Top gift ideas
- Order flowers from a local florist and ask for them to be wrapped in paper that can be recycled, and remember to compost the flowers afterwards
- If bling is their thing, consider designer jewellery that is made from recycled materials. See www.recyclenow.com/shopping for more ideas
