Get happy about real nappy week in Hackney

New and expecting parents in Hackney can find out how to save money and have some fun at events to mark Real Nappy Week (16-22 May).

Real Nappy Week in Hackney is a fun and informative week of events organised by the Hackney Real Nappy Network with support from the Council. Highlights include a fashion show with information stall and retailers in Shoreditch; the real nappy teddy bear’s picnic and clothes swap in Dalston; and the Nappuccino event at Hackney City Farm, E2.

The annual, national awareness campaign provides support and advice to people who are keen to help protect the environment. To help them get started, the Council offers a £54 voucher to those who want to make the change to real nappies.

The money can be used to cover the costs of buying cloth nappies or using a laundering service. A local laundry service offers weekly collections and delivers a fresh supply of nappies for a similar cost to that of buying disposables. Using real nappies can save parents around £500 per baby when compared with disposables.

Councillor Feryal Demirci, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Real Nappy Week is a great way for people to see how they can do their bit to help reduce waste in Hackney. The benefits of using real cloth nappies are huge - not only can you save money, but you can also do your bit for the environment.”
