Get fit and healthy in Hackney s parks - Parks for Life 2011

After the success of last summers Parks for Life, Hackney Council is again introducing a programme of free events in its award-winning parks.

The 2011 summer of fun, kicks off today (6 June) and runs until September with free events for children and families, teenagers and older people. Activities are aimed at getting fit and healthy and encouraging people make the most of Hackney’s parks.

On Sunday 24 July, Haggerston Park, will host a flagship fun family activity day to celebrating a year to go until the 2012 Games. The afternoon will centre on a traditional family sports day and will have a range of activities including egg and spoon and sack races. Professional sports coaches will also offer football and table tennis coaching sessions.

For anyone who would rather relax on the grass a community stage will provide live music and there will be a host of healthy eating food stalls as well as a market area for you to browse in. A children’s activity zone will provide a host of entertainment throughout the event. There will also be a chance to find out more about Hackney Council and its libraries, museum and leisure centres.

Throughout the summer, the Council is also running a series of weekly activities in Hackney Parks - including free Tai Chi, Circuit Training, Capoeira for Kids and Healthy Walks for older people.

This year, the Hackney One Carnival procession will make its way to Clissold Park, 7 August for a free carnival event in the park – live music and dance, fitness activities, healthy eating stalls, NHS health checks, local market stall and a kid’s activity area.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Hackney’s Cabinet member for Health, Social Care, and Culture said: “This summer ‘Parks for Life’ will offer residents and visitors a packed programme of free events in the borough’s parks to encourage everyone to stay active and enjoy Hackney’s green spaces. This year the Hackney One Carnival procession will end in Clissold Park. ”
