First programme of trans-centred cultural events announced as part of Hackney PRIDE365
Performances, music, a virtual reality experience and a grief sauna are all part of a programme of diverse cultural events made by, for and with Hackney's Trans-community and allies to celebrate next month’s Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance.
The programme, curated through Hackney PRIDE365 grant awards, was inspired by Hackney Council’s 2023 Transgender Community Motion.
The events and activities, which bring attention to Transgender Awareness Week (13-19 November) and Transgender Day of Remembrance (20 November), include:
- Sing-along music performances from Harem of No One, a collective of queer performers of Turkish, Kurdish, Cypriot and Southwest Asian heritages, from East London
- A 360-video experience created through participatory performance by trans and non-binary people
- An intimate one-woman show, bringing to life transition stories from myth and legend
- A special celebratory live recording of the award-winning hit podcast The Breakup Monologues
I’m incredibly excited that the Culture Team at Hackney Council can support this collection of diverse cultural events led by, for or with our Trans artistic and wider community. The level of talent and ambition really shone out, and the overall response, that far exceeded our expectations, really signified the importance of a programme like this. At a time when LGBTQIA+ and especially trans people are not always given a platform to be heard, I hope this goes some way to supporting those voices.
The gender diverse community is and has been as much a vital part of this borough as any other group, part of the tapestry of the Hackney experience. They are our colleagues, our residents, our service users and more. The more we pursue understanding, the better we can serve all communities, so we’re really excited to celebrate Transgender Awareness Week with such a varied programme of events.
PRIDE365 is a year-round programme of cultural activity celebrating LGBTQIA+ communities, art and culture, which includes participation in London Pride, Para Pride, and support of the LGBT+ History Month grants.
